IMF, 아세안 2022-23년 경제 성장률 전망
IMF는 10월에 발표한 <세계경제전망(World Economic Outlook)> 보고서에서 아세안 주요 5개국(필리핀, 말레이시아, 태국, 인도네시아, 베트남)의 성장 전망치를 2022년 5.3%, 2023년 4.3%로 예상함. 이는 G7 등 주요국(2.0%)의 예상 성장치를 상회하는 수치로, 세계 경제 침체와 지표 하락에도 불구하고 아세안의 시장 잠재력을 보여주는 성장 전망임.
미 연준 금리 0.75%p 인상 발표에도 아세안을 포함한 대다수 동남아 국가의 화폐는 비교적 외부 충격을 잘 견딘 것으로 평가되는 등 화폐가치가 하락하였음에도 증시 폭락이나 자본 이탈 현상은 나타나지 않음. 모든 아세안 화폐들은 달러 강세화에 따른 압박감을 느끼고 있는 것은 사실이며, 변동성이 유지되는 한 향후 수개월간 금리 인상을 피하기 어려움. 실제로 말레이시아(1.75% → 2.5%)와 인도네시아(3.5% → 4.25% )는 금리를 0.75%p 인상함. 이러한 금리 인상은 경제를 위축시킬 가능성이 있으나 미 연준 등의 금리 인상보다는 다소 완만한 금리 상승세며 원자재 가격 인상 등으로 인한 수출 호조세는 2023년 동남아 경제의 성장 전망에 긍정적인 요소라고 볼 수 있음.
미국 외교 전문지 <디플로맷(The Diplomat)>은 다수의 아세안 화폐들이 적절한 기준금리 인상 및 급격한 화폐가치 하락을 관리하기 위한 외환보유고 활용 등을 통해 잘 견디고 있는 상황으로, 아세안 다수의 금융당국이 정책 신용도를 건전하게 유지하고 있다는 점도 높이 평가함.
IMF releases forecasts on ASEAN’s Economic Outlook for 2022-2023
In the World Economic Outlook report released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in October, economic growth for ASEAN’s five major economies—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam— is predicted to be 5.3% in 2022 and 4.3% in 2023. This forecast exceeded the 2% growth prospects of major economies such as the G7 and positively reflects the vast potential of the ASEAN market despite the recent global economic downturn and strong drops in leading indicators.
Despite the aggressive increase in benchmark interest rates by the US Federal Reserve by as high as 75 basis points, currencies of most Southeast Asian countries have held up well against external shocks. With the region’s currencies under pressure due to the rising US dollar, a trend of rising rate hikes is expected to persist over the next few months as volatility in the market remains. Particularly, Malaysia (1.75% → 2.5%) and Indonesia (3.5% → 4.25%) have already raised their benchmark interest rates by 75 basis points. While such hikes might dampen economic growth, expectations for export growth through higher raw material prices can be seen as a positive outlook for the ASEAN economy next year.
The Diplomat, a US-based online news and current affairs website, positively rated ASEAN economies for maintaining policy credibility and said ASEAN currencies are enduring well through the proper use of foreign exchange reserves that prevents sharp currency depreciation and appropriate hikes in their benchmark interest rates.
프놈펜-시아누크빌 고속도로 완공, 10월 1일 시범 운행 시작
수도인 프놈펜과 캄보디아 최대 항구도시인 시아누크빌을 연결하는 고속도로가 3년의 공사(건설: 중국국영도로교량공사, CRBC)를 거쳐 10월 1일에 개통됨. 총 길이는 187.05km로 두 도시 간의 이동 시간은 기존 약 5시간에서 2시간으로 단축할 것으로 예상됨.
10월 1일부터 무료 시범 운행되고 있는 캄보디아 최초의 고속도로는 첫 2주간 약 20만 대의 차량이 운행된 것으로 집계되었음. 캄보디아 공공교통부는 이번 고속도로 개통으로 인한 교통 혼잡 완화, 이동 시간 및 운송 비용 절감 등의 효과로 캄보디아 경제와 관광에 큰 역할을 하는 중요한 인프라가 될 것으로 기대한다고 밝힘.
캄보디아는 국가 전략 차원에서 경제 성장과 다양화를 위해 이번 고속도로 완공을 시작으로 국가 최대 산업단지인 시아누크빌 경제특구(SSEZ) 설치와 시아누크빌주 특별 관광지구 개발 계획, 시아누크빌 국제공항을 확장시켜 2030년까지 최대 천만 명의 승객을 수용할 계획을 공유하고, 시아누크빌 항만 설비를 증설하는 등 인프라 확충을 위한 장기 전략을 발표함.
Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway starts trial operations on October 1
The expressway connecting the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh and the country’s largest port city of Sihanoukville opened to public on October 1 after three years of construction by China National Highway Bridge Corporation. Spanning a total length of 187.05 kilometers, the travel time between the two cities is expected to be reduced from about 5 hours to 2 hours.
Cambodia’s first expressway has attracted over 200,000 vehicles since its opening on October 1. The Cambodian Ministry of Public Works and Transport said the expressway is expected to play a crucial role in both the development of the country’s economy and its tourism sector particularly through the easing of traffic congestions, shorter travel time, and lower transportation costs.
Cambodia’s long-term plan to expand its infrastructure by 2030 also includes among others the installation of the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone (SSEZ), the nation’s largest industrial complex; the expansion of Sihanoukville International Airport to accommodate a capacity of up to 10 million passengers by 2030; as well as the enlargement of port facilities in Sihanoukville.
